Abstract
Prophet Micah epitomizes not only his own messages but also messages of the eighth-century prophets in Mic 6:6-8. The call to do justice and to love devotion/kindness and to walk humbly with God at the end of this passage captures the essential themes of the eighth-century prophets and indeed of the Old Testament. Micah questions “What does the Lord want from me?” “What have to I bring with me when I come into His presence and do sacri- fece that will make me acceptable?” “How can I approach God?” God requires not some external things from His people but internal. He requires ultimately “to practice justice”, “ to love kindness”, and “to walk with God.” The notion “to practice justice” is a dynamic one. It is the thematic word of Amos, especially Amos 5:24. It means to work forthe establishment of equity for all, especially for the powerless. The second notion, “to love devotion” matches hesed of prophet Hosea. These two words, justice and devotion are like the two side of a coin to the chosen people. And third no- tion, “to walk humbly with your God” is the main topic of Isaiah who preaches unconditional belief in God. And it stresses the theological di- mension of the sort of life God wants. The word “walk”(חלך) is used to de- scribe the whole orientation of one’s life in the Old Testament. Micah and three other eighth-century prophets exert important influence upon each other. To them, the worship to God is not only liturgical behavior but also theological, social ethics.
