이 논문은 종교개혁 이후 무기력하고 타락했던 개신교회 현실을 새롭게 갱신하려는 독일 경건주의 운동의 대표자 중의 한 명인 A. H. 프랑케 (August Hermann Francke, 1663-1727)의 교육사상과 실천을 고찰한 것이 다. 그는 경건주의적 교육을 통해 개인적인 경건을 함양할 뿐 아니라, 교회 와 사회를 개혁하려고 노력했다. 그의 교육철학은 단순히 추상적인 이론에 근거한 것이 아니라 자신의 체 험과 실천 속에서 확증된 것에 기반 한 것이다. 그의 교육 사업은 30년 전쟁 의 여파로 피폐해진 독일인들의 삶을 변화시키고 타락한 사회를 개혁하려는 간절함 속에서 시작되었다. 참된 교육은 단순한 지식의 전수나 증가에 있지 않고 성령을 통한 삶의 변화에 있다고 그는 보았다. 그는 특별히 어린이나 청소년의 교육을 중시하였다. 이때 형성된 신앙과 삶의 태도가 미래의 삶에 지대한 영향을 끼친다고 생각했기 때문이다. 그는 교육을 학교 자체의 과업으 로만 생각하지 않고 가정이나 사회의 공동과제로 인식했다. 특별히 그는 교육 과 교육을 받는 학생들이 처한 사회 복지적 형편과의 상관성에 주목했다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the educational thinking and practice of August Hermann Francke(1663-1727) who was one of the repre- sentatives of the German Pietism to renew the Protestant Church, which has been powerless and corrupt since the Reformation. He tried to reform the church and society, as well as foster personal piety through a pietistic education. His philosophy of education is not based solely on abstract theory, but on proven in his own experiences and practices. His education project be- gan with the vision to change the lives of the impoverished Germans in the aftermath of the 30-year war and to reform the corrupt society. True educa- tion, he saw, was not simply about the transfer or increase of knowledge but about the change of life through the Holy Spirit. He particularly emphasized the education of children and adolescents. This is because he felt that the faith and attitudes of life during that time will have a profound impact on life in the future. He saw education not only as a task of the school itself, but as a common task of family or society. In particular, he noted the relevance of the social and welfare conditions of students who are educated.
