Abstract
James, the brother of Jesus, was an influential leader of earliest Christianity. His memories, however, were reduced and forgotten in the church history. While James has received academic attention in the Western world, he remains in a peripheral position in Korean New Testament scholarship. This study calls attention to James and discusses the historical importance of James' activities as an early church leader. To this end, we ex- plore early church's situations and the role of James by studying the Christian and the non-Christian literature of the early church era, such as New Testament materials and the works by, for instance, Hegesippus, Eusebius, Josephus and Philo and Gnostic literature excavated in Nag Hammadi. James as the leader of the Jerusalem church served to lead churches to mutual ac- ceptance and harmony. Our historical study of James will provide significant implications for the Korean church and the general society, which, re- spectively, suffers disputes over a variety of issues and mutual criticism. It can provide useful material for a Christian college education on early Christian history.
