Abstract

This article will explore how the Rev. Pai Minsoo’s life and his legacy are inherited. It can be an exemplary model for the future of Korean society, particularly for the farming villages of Korea. The Rev. Pai loved God, loved farming villages, and loved labor. Therefore, we call it ‘Samae’, which means the spirit of three loves. Because of his involvement in the independence movement during the Japanese colonial rule, he was imprisoned twice during his Sungsil high school period, and during the Korea’s Independence Movement. His patriotism is connected to his love of God. As a pastor he devoted his work for Korean farming villages. After the liberation of Korea, he became the head of Farmers’ Bank and continued to serve farming villages. He published journals, Nongmin Saengwhal (farmers’ life) and Sae Nongmin (new farmers), and established a school for farmers. When he passed away, his family donated his property to Yonsei university to continue his legacy. Although the wishes of his will and the conditions of the donation were not well executed in the first few years, more recently Yonsei built a memorial church and established bi-annual memorial lecture commemorating Rev. Pai. Furthermore, Yonsei selected a few MA and Ph. D students in the Global Institute of Theology, and the Theology for Multi Farming Pastorate program in order for the legacy of Rev. Pai to continue.
