트랜스젠더리즘에 대한 기독교 신학적 고찰－ 윤리적 함의와 문제점을 중심으로

초록

트랜스젠더리즘이 중요한 사회적 이슈로 부각되고 있지만 이에 대한 기독교 신학적 고찰은 미비한 상태다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문은 기독교신학의 관점에서 트랜스젠더리즘을 분석하고, 그에 따른 윤리적 함의를 추적한다. 이를 위한 예비적 고찰로서 트랜스젠더리즘의 용어적 의미와 역사적 연원, 그리고 현대적 용례에 살펴본다. 다음으로 이와 같은 새로운 젠더 이데올로기가 등장하게 된 사상적 배경을 탐구한다. 본고는 인간의 주관성을 강조한 낭만주의로부터 현대사상가들의 종교비판을 거쳐, 포스트모더니즘과 과학주의에 이르는 일련의 과정이 트랜스젠더리즘을 등장시키는 중요한 동력이 되었다고 주장한다. 이어 트랜스젠더리즘의 신학적 문제점을 크게 두 가지로 제시한다. 첫째는 트랜스젠더리즘이 영-육 이론원에 기대어 육체를 극복의 대상으로 삼음으로써 영지주의적 오류를 범하고 있다는 것이고, 둘째는 육체적, 물적 토대를 무시함으로써, 윤리적 허무주의를 야기한다는 것이다. 마지막으로 새라 코클리의 신학을 참고하여 젠더 불쾌증의 극복을 위한 방법을 기독교 영성의 전통, 특별히 금욕주의와 종말론적 희망 안에서 모색해본다.

Abstract

While transgenderism is emerging as an important social issue in our society, Christian theological reflections on it are scarce. In this context, this study analyzes transgenderism from the perspective of Christian theology and traces its ethical implications. As a preliminary step, I examine the terminological meaning, historical origins, and contemporary usage of transgenderism. Next, I explore the ideological backgrounds from which this new gender ideology emerged. I argue that a series of processes— from Romanticism’s emphasis on human subjectivity, through modern thinkers’ critique of religion, to postmodernism and scientism —have been important drivers of the emergence of transgenderism. I then present two main theological problems with transgenderism: the first is that transgenderism commits the gnostic fallacy by leaning on mind-body dualism and making the body the object of overcoming, and the second is that by ignoring the physical and biological foundations of the world, it creates ethical nihilism. Finally, drawing on Sarah Coakley’s theology, I propose a way to overcome ‘gender dysphoria’ within the tradition of Christian spirituality, particularly asceticism and eschatological hope.
