조나단 에드워즈(Jonathan Edwards, 1703-1758)는 대각성운동 부흥사요 목회자요, 그리고 신학자로서 주로 알려져 있다. 그러나 에드워즈는 그에 못지않게 선교사로서도 많은 일을 했다. 본 논문은 에드워즈가 명실상부한 선교사였다는 것을 고찰해보고자 한다. 그의 선교사로서의 주된 사역은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그가 선교사가 되어 스톡브리지로 갔을 때 그는 교회에서 목회자로서 목양하며 설교했다. 그런데 그 설교는 인디언들이 잘 이해할 수 있도록 쉽고 짧으면서도 이야기를 통해서 전달하려고 시도한 맞춤형 설교였다. 둘째, 그는 교육선교사로서 기숙학교와 주간학교에서 인디언 학생들을 가르치면서 당대 최고 수준의 교육을 시키려고 애썼다. 셋째, 그는 자신의 인디언 교구민들이 백인들로부터 착취를 당하거나 불공정한 일을 당할 때는 언제나 선교지 교구민들의 편에서 그들의 권리와 이익을 지켜주기 위해 노력한 선교사였다. 넷째, 그는 행정가로서 선교지 학교의 여러 가지 혼란한 문제들을 잘 해결해 나가는 놀라운 솜씨를 발휘했다. 그리고 이에 더하여 에드워즈는 데이비드 브레이너드의 생애에 관한 전기를 출판하 면서 현대 선교에 많은 영향력을 끼친 특별한 선교사이다. 에드워즈는 선교사로 기억되어야 할 소중한 선교 유산이다.
Abstract
Jonathan Edwards(1703-1758) is primarily known as a Great Awakening revivalist, pastor and theologian. But Edwards did just as much as a missionary. This article aims to examine that Edwards was a true missionary in name and reality. His main work as a missionary is as follows. First, when he became a missionary and went to Stockbridge, he pastored and preached as a pastor at a church. However, the sermon was a customized sermon that tried to convey through a story that was easy and short so that the Indians could understand it well. Second, as an educational missionary, he tried to provide the highest level of education at the time while teaching Indian students in boarding schools and a day school. Third, he was a missionary who tried to defend the rights and interests of his own Indian parishioners on the side of the parishioners of the mission field whenever they were exploited or treated unfairly by whites. Fourth, as an administrator, he showed remarkable skill in resolving various confusing problems of the mission field school. And in addition to this, Edwards is a special missionary who has had a great influence on modern missionary work by publishing a biography of the life of David Brainerd. Edwards is a precious missionary legacy that should be remembered as a missionary.
