Abstract

This study is on why “being baptized means putting on Christ” in Galatians 3:27, “For all of you who have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” “Putting on Christ” is one of the many metaphors (justification, regeneration, adoption, reconciliation, etc.) that Paul used to explain salvation, and it seems to be a message that Paul conveys that Jesus Christ restored the “clothes of light (glory) that Adam had lost” found in the Old Testament and Jewish documents of the Second Temple. The incident in Exodus 34:29-35 where Moses’ face shone implies that the garment of light that Adam lost when he fell (Ps. 8:5-8; Ezek. 28:13-15) would one day be restored (Ex. 34:29, 35). However, in 2 Corinthians 3, Paul intentionally undermines the status of Moses as a figure representing the old covenant by saying that “the light (glory) on Moses’ face was the old covenant that would one day disappear” (2 Cor. 3:7, 11, 13). In this way, the old covenant with its temporary nature has been replaced by the new covenant (gospel = Jesus), and he asserts that “Jesus is the one who has completely restored the garment of light that Adam lost, and is the light of the new covenant that replaces the light of the old covenant on Moses’ face” (2 Cor. 3:18; 4:5-6). Paul had received a high level of Jewish training (Acts 22:3-5; 26:4-5; Galatians 1:13-14; Philippians 3:4-6), so he would have been familiar with the passages about “Adam losing the garment of light” in Jewish literature during the Second Temple period, and based on “Adam Christology,” he taught the Galatians the message that “the way for humanity, who lost the garment of light due to Adam's sin, to regain it is to believe in Jesus of Nazareth as the eschatological Christ and be baptized to signify union with him and be clothed with Christ” (Gal. 3:27).
