Abstract
The early record of place name ‘Yangju(楊州)’ can be found from the historical records of the conquest war by Wang Geon(王建) during the Later Three Kingdoms period, but this is a retroactive application of place names from the Goryeo period(King Taejo). Immediately after the establishment of Goryeo, the present-day Seoul area was called ‘Yangju’, and the present-day Yangju City area was called ‘Gyeonju(見州)’. Looking at 『Samguk Sagi』, the Goryeo Dynasty's Gyeonju originated from the Maeseong(買省) of the Three Kingdoms Period which was called Laesogun(來蘇郡) during the Unified Silla period. Under the reign of King Taejo of the Goryeo, Gyeonju was established as a single administrative unit, and later it was compiled under the jurisdiction of Yangju when the local system was reestablished by King Hyeonjong. At this time, the Yangju government was located in what is now the central area of Seoul. Yangju was elevated to Namgyeong(南京) during the reign of King Munjong, and was later reorganized into Hanyangbu(漢陽府) by King Chungnyeol. After the founding of Joseon, Hanyang, present-day Seoul, was designated as the capital, and the Hanyangbu of Goryeo was reorganized into the Hanseongbu(漢城府) of Joseon. Furthermore, Joseon moved the Hanyangbu of the Goryeo Dynasty to the Gyeonju region, which is now Yangju City, Gyeonggi Province, and also changed its administrative designation to ‘Yangju’. This is when the name ‘Yangju’ was first given to the current Yangju City area. However, it is considered that the relocation of Hanyangbu and the establishment of Yangju were not propelled at the same time. During the reign of King Taejo of Joseon, when Hanseongbu was established, Hanyangbu was demoted to Yangju-gun and was temporarily located in ‘Daedong-ri, Dongchon(東村 大洞里)’, which is now part of Gwangjang-dong, Gwangjin-gu. It is highly likely that Daedong-ri, Dongchon, was the base of Hanyanggun(漢陽郡; Bukhansangun), Silla. In this way, ‘Yangju’ was settled in Daedong-ri, Dongchon, which is now the Seoul area, for a short time. Then it moved to become a part of the current Yangju 1-dong(Youyang-dong), Yangju City after constrution of the new government buildings in the Gyeonju area. The current Yangju 1-dong area in Yangju City was used as the administrative center. This is Eupnae-myeon(邑內面), Yangju-gun, in the late Joseon Dynasty. In the case of Gyeonju, the location of the administrative center had not changed and the area is now Yangju 2-dong(Goeup-dong; 古邑洞), Yangju City, and was called Gojunae-myeon(古州內面) in the late Joseon Dynasty. Gojunae-miyeon and Eupnae-myeon were combined as Junae-myeon(州內面) later, and finally became Yangju-eup, Yangju-gun after liberation in 1945.
