Abstract
The use of POW camps as a meaning as well as a subject was noticeable in Korean novels of the 1950's. The image of the camps and the related depictions of prisoners and battlefields present a concrete and easily identifiable representation of the harsh realities of the age. They also demonstrate the camp to be a place of ideological conflicts as well as a place of representing the prisoners ontologically. The novels use the POW camps to emphasize the division between the ideological conflicts of the worlds inside and outside of the camps. Therefore, the relatively common event of desertions are treated as very important events as they demonstrate the ideological movements between the two worlds and emphasize individual respon! ses to one's situation on either side of the fence. The ideological movements were shown through the Korean War as the ideological proxy war by the Western Power. Under the war, an ideological choice of a prisoner in the POW camp often became the same thing of a choice between life and death.
