Abstract

Taejun Lee tried to make a rhetoric of Korean writings. I intended to examine how he invented the modern method of position and how he found out the rhetoric method. He knew that the rhetoric contains the aspect of persuasion. So he criticised the normative rhetoric of premodern. Instead he was interested in the modern rhetoric which was relative with the assimilation of writing with speaking. He did not regarded a rhetoric as figure but as ‘saying it well’. So he accommodated the rhetoric of persuasion. In Munjang ganhhwa, he presented a lot of rhetoric methods for persuasion. Stressing on the importance the rhetorical situation, he presented the rhetoric of ordinary writing such as a diary, a editorial, a formal address, a description of impression. He wrote the political propaganda owing to the rhetoric argument and passion. He explained the normal style in writing. But he tried to define a modern writing by individualism in style. He was interested in the sensitive characteristics of Korean in literary writing. He stressed on the richness of Korean phonetic symbols. In the while, he did not explain the principle of simile and metaphor. He regarded a metaphor as a ‘abbreviated simile’. He emphasized the descriptive and sensitive writing and the rhetoric of prose.
