‘종을 울려 보은한 새 설화’ 연구- 설화들의 관계양상과 의미체계를 중심으로 -

Abstract

Oh, Se-jeong, 2007, A Study on the Tale of Bird's ringing out of Gratitude, URIMALGEUL: The Korean Language and Literature 39, pp.195～219. The tale of magpie or pheasant's ringing out of gratitude is widely known famous type of the tales of animal's requite. That tales have common structure, there are typical four behaviors: ‘a man's relief’, ‘man's danger’, ‘snake's revenge’, ‘bird's requite’. That is of a piece with the structure of the ‘animal returns folktale’ in general. However the tales of bird's ringing out of gratitude are focus on the ringing the bell, not the character of animals who return the kindness with gratitude. What's more important is very the snake's true character. Some tales in the tales' of the bird's ringing out of gratitude show the differences to embody meaning of the ringing the bell, or to simplify the narrative structure. But Wonju in Gangwon Province there is the folktale about pheasant's ringing out of gratitud and history of the Sangwon-temple(上院寺)and Buddhist bell. In this tale the corrupt bonze and his paramour became the snakes from the Haven's judgment. Through the tale we could grasp the distinctive feature of tales' of the bird's ringing out of gratitude and approach the meaning-system and relationship of that tales. (The Academy of Korean Studies)
