Abstract

Geumdallae-Iyagi is a character narrative which appeared in Daegu and then has been widely passed down among people. Geumdallae, a hero of the story, indulged in doing outrageous doings as a crazy person. The fact that a tale about Geumdallae, nothing but a crazywoman, has been informed by word of mouth for a long time in Daegu province has a deep meaning. Therefore, the researcher arranged the traditional aspects of Geumdallae-Iyagi and analyzed its meanings, and the results of study can be summarized as follows; First, Geumdallae-Iyagi has been composed of various motifs including her birthplace, madness, marks in her life, subsequent events and opinions. Among them, the objects of attention are the motif that Geumdallae might not be mad, and the various marks in her life. Her marks in life can be classified into three cases, that is, the one when supposing that she was mad, the peculiar one; the ordinary case, and each case also shows a variety of aspects. Second, it started with the stories of personnel experiences in which strange marks in life of the character were centered, however it had been gradually advanced toward becoming fictitious, with indirect stories of experiences being derived and explications and suppositions being added by persons who handed it down. Geumdallae-Iyagi had developed while positive cognition and negative one having conflicted each other about the character among tellers. As a result, there was an opinion occurring that she might be a spy for the army for national independence under the rule of Japanese imperialism.
