Manchurian Narrative and Anti-colonial “Imaginary Community”: On the Manchurian Narratives of Lee Gi-young and Han Seol-ya

The main purpose of this essay is to interpret the meanings of "imaginary community" of the "race without nation" that is built through the cracks and gaps of Manchurian Ideology in Lee's The Son of the earth and Han's The Continent. After the Manchrian Event, the newly born nation Manchu is a field for advertisement and experiment of imperialist ideology. This ideology, however, means an illusion which has a gap with its reality. Lee and Han wanted to show this reality through the central axis of the narrative such as 'bandit' and 'romance' each. The viewpoint through which the gaps are revealed could results in the building of the renowned imaginary community in the third place. Lee built a Chosun Community without the colonial power and Han organized a non-racial united community without state power. These imaginary communities could be positively estimated as a kind of trials for criticising and deconstructing the imperialist ideologies.
