Abstract

In Korea, the word ‘Nara’ has a double meaning. The first meaning is a word indicating a political community and a historical community having persisted without replacement of a dynasty in Korean peninsula. The second meaning is a Korean word indicating a modern nation state. Therefore, literature before independence in 1945 shall be defined to ‘Nara making’not being for ‘looking for a Nara’. ‘Nara’ as a modern nation state did not exist before independence in 1945. So ‘looking for a Nara’ was just like the ‘Nara making’. Baek Seok’s poetry was one of the types of ‘Nara making’. An aspect of the ‘Nara making’ which appeared in case of Baek Seok’s poetry is related with a characteristic of the sense of taste. The sense of taste is related with various places such as body, home, a community, a region in Baek Seok’s poetry. The reason why Baek Seok is mentioning the various tastes of place is that taste of place is joined with identity. He found out own identity and identity of group which he belonged to at the places which he thought valuably about not being historic time. And that kind of places appear as parts of the ‘Nara’ which Baek Seok aimed finally at. Though ‘Nara’ is different from a nation, a state, the global, it is distinctive concept embracing the all in Baek Seok’s poetry. Baek Seok’s Nara has a natural boundary which all living things can go in and out instead of exclusive artificial boundaries. And it has a panvitalism extended than general love of mankind. Throughout long search, he realizes the fact that the signs of Nara maintained a tenacious vitality through the mind. Baek Seok’s poetry finally talk about the following fact. ‘Where and how do minds which have filled with the Nara exist?’ ‘How can we recognize that minds?’
