본고는 이청준의 소설 「무서운 토요일」(1966), 「병신과 머저리」(1966),「나무 위에서 잠자기」(1968)에서의 화해불가능한 남녀 관계의 양상을 고찰한다. 이청준 소설에서의 ‘화해불가능성(irreconcilability)’을 그의 소설을 관통하는 핵심적인 요소로 전제한다면, 그의 소설에 나타난 화해불가능성의 원형을 추적하고 그 원형의 변주를 검토하는 일은 중요하다. 그런 맥락에서, 본고는 「퇴원」(1965)에서 남녀 관계에 대한 기묘한 형상을 화해불가능성의 원형으로 포착하였다. 그리고 1960년대에 발표된 이청준의 소설, 즉 「무서운 토요일」, 「병신과 머저리」, 「나무 위에서 잠자기」를 대상으로, 화해불가능한 남녀 관계의 원형이 변주되는 양상을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 각 작품에서 ‘나’의 의식, 즉 불결감, 열등감, 불안감이 남녀 관계의 훼방꾼으로 개입되고, 그들의 사랑은 실패를 거듭하였다. 이를 통해, 이청준 소설에서의 독특한 사랑의 양상을 재확인하였다.
Abstract
This paper examines the irreconcilable aspects of the relationship between man and woman in Lee Cheong-jun’s novels, “Horrible Saturdays”(1966), “Idiot and stupid”(1966) and “Sleeping on a Tree”(1968). If “irreconcilability” in Lee’s novels is premised as a key element penetrating his novels, it is important to trace the archetype of the irreconcilability in his novel and examine its variation. In that context, this paper captured the strange image of the relationship between man and woman in “Discharge”(1965) as a prototype of irreconcilability. In addition, in Lee Cheong-jun’s novels published in the 1960s, such as “Horrible Saturdays”(1966), “Idiot and stupid”(1966), “Sleeping on a Tree”(1968), this paper considered the patterns in which the prototype of the irreconcilable relationship was changed. As a result, in each work, the consciousness of “I”, that is, feelings of filthiness, inferiority, and anxiety were intervened as intruder of their relationship, and their love repeatedly failed. Through this, this paper reaffirmed the unique aspect of love in Lee Cheong-jun’s novel.
