Abstract

This article aims to examine how blacks are represented in Korean modern novels as the Others in 'We'. The question of methods of representation does not stop at examining what image black people are expressed in. As black people are represented in a specific way, reading in a certain direction is induced, thereby asking about the way of producing meaning. In the novel, black people are represented in a specific way by being an object of observation, being captured by the gaze that compels faith, being placed in a narrative composition emphasizing blackness, and being at a certain distance from the narrator or the protagonist. In this regard, it is possible to read ‘different’ if you do not read that objectify black characters, but that you identify with black characters from the standpoint of black characters. In addition, if the problem of the gaze of capturing black characters ‘transparently’ and breaking down the narrative composition method that emphasizes the negative characteristics of black people, we can think about the problem of black people differently from the direction derived from the novel. In addition, if you critically look at the formalized distance problem between the narrator or the character and the black character, you may be able to imagine a different way of meeting and connecting with the distance repeatedly suggested in relation to the black character. This article is meaningful in that it examines the possibility of reading ‘different’ while taking the ‘method’ of black people appearing in contemporary Korean novels as a problem. Through this article, we can see how blacks are abstracted as ‘Others’ in ‘us’ and their characteristics are reproduced in negative aspects. In addition, it is possible to look at the problem of black representation on from a critical point of view by seeking the possibility of other reading based on an understanding of the Other.
