Abstract
This study undertakes a re-examination of the concept of “forced choice” and the perception of the world in the early short stories of Lim Cheol-woo, widely recognized as a representative figure of “May literature.” Lim’s early short fiction consistently interrogates the various manifestations of violence in the world. In doing so, his works articulate an awareness of a world that resists presentation as a completed totality and render the unrepresentable nature of violence in narrative form. Within these texts, characters are situated in conditions that compel them to choose between repression (forgetting) and remembrance (remembering) of traumatic events. Repression is configured merely as a form of “sleep” and as a mechanism of conformity to the symbolic order, relegating the subject to a debased existence. Conversely, remembrance intensifies the subject’s fragmentation due to the absence of a prospect, either resulting in displacement from the socio-symbolic order or precipitating psychotic collapse. This study contends that such a structure constitutes a “forced choice” imposed by the symbolic order, one that the subject is structurally compelled to undertake in seeking a place within the social framework. Even within this imposed dichotomy, the subject’s decision invariably leads to internal division and an encounter with the tragic Real of an unrepresentable world. This outcome affirms the persistence of an unresolvable gap within the world, irrespective of which option is selected. This dynamic is further dramatized within Lim’s lyrical narratives, in which forms posited as possessing beauty emerge as “lights.” Particular attention is paid to these “lights,” which diffuse obliquely through mediating screens such as “droplets” and “windows,” thereby constituting elusive images that defy material apprehension. By engaging this phenomenon through the theoretical lens of “suture” and its relation to the impossibility of closure, this study seeks to elucidate its broader significance. In conclusion, while Lim’s guilt-driven narratives foreground the subject’s fragmentation through the paradoxical structure of a violently imposed forced choice, his lyrical narratives sustain an awareness of the gap that persists beyond the act of choosing, thereby underscoring the impossibility of realizing totalized meaning.
