Abstract
It has been said that Kim Sa-ryang’s novels of the late Japanese colonial period were a result of resisting the dark age by preserving things Korean. It has been evaluated as not being pro-Japanese literature. However, unlike his previous novels, Taebaeksanmaek[太白山脈](1943) is a pro-Japanese work. This article closely scrutinized the characteristics of the character structure and narrative structure of Taebaeksanmaek, and based on that result, examined the main storylines of the novel on the one hand, as well as the aspirations of the protagonists who are in unity with the narrator on the other. By organizing the contents confirmed in the previous work and interpreting the thematic effects, this article inferred the meanings that could not have been avoided in the circumstances of the late Japanese colonial period in which the novel was serialized. Through this, it was concluded that Taebaeksanmaek is a pro-Japanese literary work. Taebaeksanmaek has thematic effects such as the ‘theory of Joseon’s destruction’, the distortion and criticism of Donghak[東學], the ‘theory of Joseon’s despair’, and the ‘theory of Joseon’s underdeveloped society’. In this contexts, Taebaeksanmaek repeated the colonial view of history that the Japan-Korea annexation was inevitable and ‘the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere’ theory advocated by Japanese imperialism at the time. It also naturally met the demands of the policies enforced by Japan in colonial Korea, such as the theory of the unification of Korea and Japan, imperialization of Koreans, and the national solidarity in the rear during wartime.
