It stands against forced situation with detour strategy and has a meaning as a turning point of his literary world. The Tae Baik Mountains is linked with his previous works in that it features ‘the motive of fire field farmers’ and ‘the uniqueness of chosun.’ This essay focuses on how the main characteristics of his works signifies in the specific time of 1943 in Chosun, concentrating on the common points. The motive of fire field farmers is one of his consistent concerns, which is used to express disastrous reality of the nation as a material. For example, in “Deep Into the Grass”, fire field farmers as a subaltern implies the reality of Chosun that cannot accept national policy of colonialism, In The Tae Baik Mountains, however, fire field farmers are represented as an other who struggles to realize their dreams of imagined community as they have been absorbed in the enlightening will of the main character, Yoon, Cheon-Il. The reality of colonialism cannot be conquered with compulsive dominant order, nor overcome with the will of enlightenment, which is what his ‘uniqueness of chosun’ has its effect.
