Abstract
This study investigates the difficulties and strategies involved in Korean–Russian sight tranlsation by conducting an experimental task with seven Russian-speaking interpreters who have a high level of Korean proficiency. The analysis yielded the following results. First, among the repair operations observed during sight translation, “Replacing” was the most frequent, followed by “Reformatting,” “Recycling,” “Inserting,” and “Aborting.” Regardless of category, most repairs were not for error correction but rather for selecting more accurate or natural expressions in the target language. Second, a comparison of sight translation time and the number of repairs between sentence-level and segment-level tasks revealed a statistically significant reduction in segmentation time only in ST 2. However, the findings indicate that the difficulty of sentence segmentation is determined not by the segmentation unit itself, but rather by the structural complexity and lexical difficulty of the text. Third, strategies used to overcome syntactic differences between Korean and Russian were examined. In the case of relative clauses, participants either restructured them as independent sentences or used participles and relative pronouns. The conjunctive ending -면서, which expresses simultaneity, was rendered using converbs, parallel verb constructions, conjunctions, or clause juxtaposition. The instrumental case particle -로 was translated using the preposition благодаря, or by restructuring the sentence to place the cause as the subject and emphasize the result. Given that sight translation is widely applicable in simultaneous interpreting, community interpreting, and foreign language education, the findings of this study may serve as a useful foundation for interpreter training and practice.
