This study attempts to investigate the character of the authorized new Manchu words and the method of word formation of Manchu, through examining newly included headwords in Yuzhi Zengding Qingwenjian. The authorized new Manchu words had been enacted to overcome the contamination of the mother tongue which is inevitable in the process of absorbing the more advanced elements of Chinese and to increase the status and authority of Manchu as a dominant language. The new headwords in Yuzhi Zengding Qingwenjian represent the authorized new Manchu words, reflecting the efforts to enrich the vocabulary of the Manchu language and also to make it noble and practical.
Abstract
