Abstract

An Acoustic Study of Mongolian Sentence ProsodyBAO Huaiqiao, HuheResearches into prosodic properties are important not only in phonetic research but also in improving the quality of a speech synthesizer. This paper aims to discuss intonation and stress in Mongolian based on acoustic analyses using KAY's Multi-Speech Model 3700. In Mongolian, F0 declination was observed in declarative and imperative sentences. But the F0 declination was steeper in imperative sentences than in declarative sentences. In interrogative sentences, however, a rising intonation pattern was imposed on a sentence final word or syllable. In exclamatory sentences, pitch range was often wider than in sentences of the other types. But the final word was not said with a rising intonation pattern, nor with a falling intonation pattern. This word was pronounced with an arrow type intonation pattern beginning on a high pitch and ending on a lower pitch. And it was also noted that emphatic stress involves high pitch in Mongolian.
