Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify what factors are important in determining the livability of cities and to analyse the citizens' satisfaction level regarding these factors in their current residential areas. The concept of livability is divided into four dimensions of personal well-being, environmental well-being, lifeworlds and governance. A survey of residents' perception of livability of cities was conducted in six largest cities in Korea. Statistical analysis is done with the survey results from 953 respondents. The analysis of this study indicates that for most of the livability factors there is a significant discrepancy between citizens' satisfaction level and the degree of importance they attach to these factors. Infrastructure related to social support system was deemed to be the most important livability factor by the residents in Seoul and Inchon, while factors related to natural environment were given high priority by the residents in other cities. Major policy implication drawn from this study is that policies designed to enhance the livability or quality of life in cities should aim to improve those factors given high priority by the citizens in each city. By doing so the perceived gap between the importance and the satisfaction of livability factors can be reduced more effectively.
