Abstract

This study uses the 2016 Settlement Survey of North Korean Refugees in South Korea data to examine determinants of social support networks of North Korean refugees in South Korea. Informational, financial, emotional, and physical social support were explored by extensive and intensive margins. The variables that reflect experiences in both North Korea and South Korea were controlled as possible determinants. The regression results demonstrate that having defected with family-related reasons, having had relatively stable jobs while in North Korea, and engaging in social activities in South Korea are associated with having social support networks in South Korea. Additionally, the South Korean support networks, an important indicator of adjustment in the South Korean society, are positively associated with having South Korean university education experience, having higher household income, and engaging in social activities in South Korea. The results imply that policies promoting opportunities for North Korean refugees’ education, employment, and social activities are important for forming and expanding their social support networks. Considering the characteristics of North Korean refugees’ support networks, the policies for the socially isolated—those without families in South Korea, with low levels of education and income, and with few social activities—require more attention.
