초개인 의식발달 관점에서 본 대행선사의 수행 여정에 관한 연구- 켄 윌버의 의식의 스펙트럼 이론 중심으로
A Study on the Practice Journey of Seon Master Daehaeng from the Perspective of Transpersonal Consciousness Development - Focusing on Ken Wilber’s Spectrum of Consciousness Theory

본 연구는 켄 윌버(Ken Wilber)의 의식의 스펙트럼 이론과 <한마음 요전>에서 대행선사의 수행 여정을 다룬 ‘수혜편’을 중심으로 대행선사의 개인에서 초개인 의식 수준의 발달 과정을 계층구조적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 윌버는 인간의 의식구조를 전개인, 개인, 초개인 수준의 의식상태로 구분하고 이를 다시 9-10개의 단계로 세분화하였다. 초개인 수준과 같은 상위구조는 단계별로 고차의 높은 성장과 발달에 의해 직접적으로 실현될 수 있다고 한다. 대행선사(1927∼2012)는 9세경 영성으로 발현된 내면의 ‘아빠’소리의 근원을 찾아 내적 여행의 길을 나서게 된다. 이후 ‘아빠’를 내면의 스승으로 삼아 죽음을 불사한 두타행 속에서 개인 수준의 최고 단계인 비전-논리적 단계에서 자아를 실현하고, 이를 넘어서 초개인 수준의 최상위 단계인 영성이 광휘로 빛나는 비이원 단계에 도달하였다. 본 연구에서 켄 윌버의 의식의 스펙트럼 이론과 대행선사의 수행 여정에서 보여준 의식발달 과정을 비교, 검토해 본 결과 대행선사는 개인을 넘어서 초개인 의식발달의 궁극 수준에 도달하였음을 통합심리학적으로 규명해 볼 수 있었다. 연구 결과, 인간의 의식은 수행을 통한 의식 변용을 거쳐 의식의 최상위 수준까지 발달할 수 있음을 보여준다. 또한 의식의 스펙트럼에 대한 전체적인 조망은 자아중심적인 사고로 살아가는 현대인에게 개인 수준의 의식을 초월하여 지구촌의 모든 생명들과 공생하고 공존하며 살아갈 수 있도록 의식의 변화를 돕는 데 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것이다. 후속 연구를 통해 대행선사와 관련된 50여 권의 도서들을 독서치료의 텍스트로서 활용 가능성에 대한 검토가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the hierarchical development process of consciousness from the personal to the transpersonal, as demonstrated in the practice journey of Seon Master Daehaeng. The focus is on Ken Wilber’s spectrum of consciousness theory and the “Suhyeo” section of <Hanmaum Yojeon>. Wilber categorizes human consciousness into three levels, namely, pre-personal, personal, and transpersonal, each subdivided into 9–10 stages. Advancement to higher levels, such as the transpersonal, comes from growth at each stage. Seon Master Daehaeng (1927–2012) began her spiritual journey at age nine, seeking the source of her inner voice, “Appa.” She later embraced “Appa” as her inner teacher and practiced dutahaeng, reaching the highest stage of personal consciousness: vision-logic. She then advanced to the non-dual stage, where her spirituality flourished. This study compares Wilber’s spectrum of consciousness theory with Seon Master Daehaeng’s practice journey, showing how she moved beyond the personal level to the transpersonal level, while experiencing various altered states of consciousness. The findings demonstrate that human consciousness can develop to its highest level through a process of transformation via practice. Furthermore, a comprehensive view of the spectrum of consciousness can assist modern individuals, who live with ego-centered thinking, transcend their individual consciousness to live in harmony and coexist with all life forms on Earth. Future research can examine the existing 50 books related to Seon Master Daehaeng as texts for bibliotherapy.
