초록
The Journal of Studies in Language 00.0, 000-000. This study examines a type of rhetorical question in Korean that functions as an exclamative rather than a polarity-reversing assertion. Unlike traditional rhetorical questions that depend on shared discourse context, exclamative rhetorical questions reflect the speaker’s surprise at an unexpected degree, often without requiring prior common ground Drawing on the degree-based approach (Rett 2011) and focus semantics, the paper argues that these questions involve covert gradable predicates and verum focus, highlighting a polarity shift between the speaker’s expectation and reality. The analysis provides a unified account of how rhetorical questions can encode exclamative meaning through mirativity and degree emphasis.
