전통적으로 인식론을 규범학이라고 했을 때, 그 규범성의 확보는 여하한 선험적인 방식을 통해 이루어져야 한다고 생각해 왔다. 그러나 콰인의 촉구 이래 인식론이 이른바 선험적 방식을 통해 지식에 대한 규범적 지침을 제공해 준다는데 대해 강한 불신을 나타내기 시작하면서 인식론을 자연과학과의 연장선상에서 이해하자는 논의로 급선회하게 된다. 이후 이를 둘러싸고 치열한 공방이 전개되어 오기는 했지만, 인식 규범이 경험적인 방식을 통해 확보될 수 있다는 콰인의 계획 테두리 내에서 그 논의가 이루어져 왔다는 사실이다. 말하자면 정도의 차이는 있을지라도 콰인의 구도에 따라 전개된 공방인 셈이다. 그런데 문제는 인식론에서의 자연화 계획을 이러한 콰인에게서 비롯되는 규범성의 제거 여부를 둘러싼 문제에만 지나치게 제한함으로써 ‘지식의 본성(nature of knowledge)’에 대한 해명이라는 인식론의 본질적인 측면을 간과해 온 점이다. 무엇보다도 콰인에 따른 자연화 계획이 ‘지식의 본성’에 대한 해명의 맥락과는 무관하게 전개되어 왔다는 사실이다. 그 단서로 콰인의 계획과는 별도로 게티어(E. Gettier) 문제로부터 비롯되는 현대 인식론의 과제 해명이라는 주류적 흐름에서 이미 자연주의적 접근이 이루어지고 있었기 때문이다. 이에 따라 콰인에 따른 자연화된 인식론이 더 이상 인식 규범을 근간으로 한 인식론에 관한 논의가 될 수 없음이 밝혀지게 될 것이고, 더 나아가 게티어의 문제에서 비롯되는 ‘지식의 본성’에 대한 해명의 맥락에 따라 인식론에 대한 자연주의적 접근이 갖는 본질적인 의미를 확인하게 될 것이다.
Abstract
When, traditionally, we regard epistemology as a normative science, the security of the epistemic norm has been thought of as something that must be accomplished through a priori method. But, since Quine announced a dissertation in 1969, a strong disbelief started to exhibit about the idea that epistemology with a priori method can lead to provide the norm guiding against a knowledge and, it soon turned out that epistemology was in the extension line of natural science. Since then, follows heated discussions to besiege this. But, in fact, those discussions was accomplished from the inside project of Quine that could secure the epistemic norm as an empirical method. Namely, whatever it may be the difference of degree, it is the offense and defense developed by Quine's plan. However, as most philosophers too much restrict the plan of naturalizing epistemology within only a case which besieges to eliminate the normality or which does not originate from Quine, a problem occurs that overlooks the essential side of epistemology, the side to elucidate about nature of knowledge.The purpose of the paper is to show: First of all, Quine's project of epistemic naturalization have been developed to the direction that have nothing to do with a standpoint of explaining the nature of knowledge. Because the naturalistic access to epistemology have been already accomplished, the main stream should be an explanation about the contemporary epistemology which is resulted from Gettier's problem, in order to separate it from the Quine's plan. Consequently, Quine's naturalized epistemology cannot be a discussion about the epistemology which has its basis of epistemic norm. Furthermore, we can identify the essential side(meaning) which has the naturalistic access to epistemology, according to which the veins of explanation about the nature of knowledge is resulted from Gettier's problem.
