본 논문의 주된 목적은 듀이의 경험으로서의 언어 개념을 통해 분석철학의 객관주의적 언어관과 상대주의적 언어관의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 제3의 가능성을 밝히려는 데 있다. 분석철학적 언어관은 언어와 활동, 언어와 삶을 분리시키는 이분법에 근거하여 언어 그 자체를 순수한 고찰 대상으로 삼는다. 이러한 분석철학적 언어관은 인간의 활동과 언어 사용을 무시하고 언어를 어떤 실체나 관념을 가리키는 도구로 간주함으로써 언어 대 사물, 언어 대 관념 식의 ‘일대일’ 대응 관계를 통해 드러나는 의미만이 언어의 참된 의미라고 간주하는 객관주의적 태도를 취한다. 반면에 로티는 분석철학의 객관주의적 언어관에 대한 그릇된 가정을 지적하고 거부한다. 하지만 로티는 언어뿐만 아니라 세계와 자아까지 우연적인 산물로 간주함으로써 의미에 관한 무제약적인 우연성 논제로 나아간다. 이로 인해 로티의 언어관은 허무주의적 상대주의라는 우려를 불러온다. 듀이에 따르면 언어는 경험에서 비롯되며, 경험은 추상적인 것이 아니라 실재적인 것이다. 듀이는 경험을 물리적 경험과 반성적 경험으로 구분한다. 이러한 경험의 두 층위는 사유 속에서만 분리될 뿐 현실적으로는 분리되지 않으며, 물리적 경험 층위에서 일정 정도의 객관적인 의미가 확보되지만, 그것을 넘어서는 창발적 확장 과정에서 의미는 상대적 변이를 드러낸다. 이러한 듀이의 경험으로서의 언어는 객관주의적 언어관과 상대주의적 언어관 사이의 갈등을 해소할 수 있는 가능성을 선취하고 있다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to show how Dewey's language as experience may settle the conflict between the objectivist and the relativist views of language by offering a third way of accounting for the nature of language. Analytic view of language is concerned exclusively with some pure form of language that separates language from human experience. Such a view disregarding human aspects of language, and thus considering language as a mere tool for referring the world and objects, leads to an objectivist view which claims that the real meaning is the one that is expressed in terms of one-to-one correspondence between language and the world. On the other hand, Rorty rejects the analytic view of language on the grounds that it is based upon the dichotomy of modern theory of knowledge. Furthermore, Rorty, by claiming that not only language but the world and the self are also contingent without any constraint, brings about the fear about the nihilistic form of relativism. According to Dewey, experience is not an autonomous system independent from human beings but a part of human activities. Namely, the problem of language is neither one of pure thought nor of contingent product, but a part of experiences necessary for a man to cope successfully with his world. Because of this the meaning of language is determined by our linguistic situation and culture. In other words, Dewey's conception of language as experience changes, adjusts, and expands through continuous activities including our purpose and intention, and comprises not only objective meanings but relative meanings to a certain degree through a mutual agreement. Thus, the conception of language as experience does not represent a relation between language and world but an expression with the common consent of our intention and behavior by means of symbolization. And because the range of such a consent is constrained and determined within a particular situation, language is not entirely contingent.
