Abstract
Believing has been considered as a two-place relation between a subject and a proposition. While solving the problems raised against the theory of direct reference in philosophy of language and against evidentialism in epistemology, however, we can discover that believing is not a two-place but a three-place relation among a subject, a proposition and a way to accept the proposition. Here the problem in philosophy of language is a problem that has to do with propositional attitude. Also, the problem in epistemology is a case in which a subject forms a belief by an irrelevant factor even if he has enough evidence to support the proposition. Interestingly, the common feature in answering these problems is to consider believing as a three-place relation. So, in this paper, I claim that believing is a three-place relation and explain why we so far have thought that it is a two-place relation.
