이 논문은 데이비드슨의 무법칙적 일원론이 자유 의지와 결정론 논변에서 양립 가능론의 길을 열어 주는지 검토하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 먼저 2절에서는 무법칙적 일원론을 소개하고 그 이론이 양립 가능론을 지지할 수 있음을 보여 주겠다. 3절에서는 양립 가능론에 대한 강력한 반론인 반 인웨건의 결과 논변을 살펴본다. 그리고 4절에서는 무법칙적 일원론 역시 이 결과 논변의 예봉을 피해 갈 수 없다고 주장하는 홍지호 교수의 논변을 비판한다. 결과 논변이 지금까지 제시된 양립 불가능중 가장 강력한 논변임을 감안할 때 무법칙적 일원론이 거기서 벗어날 수 있다면 무법칙적 일원론이 양립 가능론의 한 가지 가능성이 될 수 있을 것이다. 마지막으로 5절에서는 데이비드슨이 확보한 자율성이 자유 의지 논쟁에서 요구하는 자율성인지 검토한다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to show that Davidson’s anomalous monism can support compatibilism in the debate between free will and determinism. In section 2, I introduce anomalous monism and argue that the theory supports compatibilism. The consequence argument of van Inwagen is examined in section 3, which is the strongest argument against compatibilism. In section 4, I criticize the argument provided by Hong Ji Ho which argues that the consequence argument can apply to anomalous monism. Then free will be saved even if determinism is true provided that anomalous monism is valid. In conclusion, I examine whether the free will guaranteed by Davidson is the autonomy that is needed in free will debate.
