Abstract

Callicles, the last interlocutor in Plato’s Gorgias, vigorously condemns Socrates because of his doing philosophy in old age. The fundamental reason why Callicles despises philosophers is that they are incompetent in political activities. Confronted with the charge, Socrates tries to advocate philosophy as the only true political art. The purpose of this article is to enquire Socratic political art and Plato’s political vision of the afterlife myth in the finale to Gorgias, which has been ignored by many scholars. While many scholars have thought of the myth as the story of after life, I think of the myth as the metaphor of this world. The life of philosopher such as Socrates is not revealed as a good life through the judgment of Zeus' judges. Rather the philosopher is highly appreciated because he does the same work as Zeus's judges do: making other souls better. Moreover, since Plato recognizes the practical difficulty of Socratic political art, through Zeus’ reformation does he provide his political vision that Socratic political work requires the appropriate practice of legislative art as its precedent condition.
