나딩스의 여성중심적 돌봄 윤리를 넘어서

이 논문의 목적은 나딩스의 ‘돌봄 윤리’를 탐색함으로써 첫째, 여성중심적 사유와 남성중심적 사유의 이분법적 구도의 문제점을 지적하고 둘째, 그녀의 여성중심적 돌봄 윤리를 인간중심적 돌봄 윤리로 전환해야 한다고 제안하는 데 있다. 간호에서 돌봄은 특정인만의 전유물이 아니다. 간호적 돌봄은 여성중심적 사유와 남성중심적 사유라는 이분법적 구도에서 접근하기보다는 모든 인간을 포괄하는 ‘총체적 돌봄’, 곧 ‘인간에 대한 돌봄’을 목표로 해야 한다. 간호사는 불특정 다수의 대상자와의 관계 속에서 돌봄을 수행한다. 나딩스의 돌봄 윤리는 간호 활동의 이론적 토대를 확립하려는 선도적 시도로서 남성중심적 간호 윤리의 개념을 교정하는 데 중요한 기여를 하고 있다. 그러나 나딩스의 시각이 여성과 남성이라는 이분법적 사유로 돌봄 문제에 접근한다는 점에서 또 다른 편향을 불러올 우려가 있다. 따라서 필자는 듀이의 실용주의적 시각에 의존해서 나딩스의 돌봄 윤리가 인간중심적 돌봄 윤리로 재조정되어야 할 필요가 있다고 제안한다. 그것이 인간중심으로 조정되었을 때 간호실무에서 인간에 대한 총체적인 돌봄을 수행하는 데 더 효과적이고 유용한 도구로 작동할 것으로 보이기 때문이다.
Abstract
The goal of this paper is to show the problem of the dichotomous structure of female-centered and male-centered thinking in Noddings’ ethics of caring, and to suggest a ned for restructuring his female-centered ethics of caring into a human-centered one. Since caring in nursing is not just for some specific people, it should be approached with the goal of ‘holistic caring’ that embraces all human beings. In this sense, the notion of caring should about ‘human beings.’ Nurses perform caring in the relationship with the unspecific multitude of people. Noddings’ ethics of caring marks a pioneering effort to lay down a new theoretical ground for nursing activities and is making a significant contribution to rectifying the male-centered conception of nursing ethics. However, Noddings’ approach can bring about another prejudice so long as it approaches the issue of caring within the dichotomous picture of female-centered and male-centered thinking. Drawing on Deweyan pragmatic perspective, I suggested the necessity and the possibility of restructuring Noddings’ ethics of caring into human-centered one, which I believe will offer a more effective and useful frame in performing the holistic caring in nursing practice.
