니체 철학에서 자살 문제에 관한 고찰

니체는 ‘이성적인 죽음’(vernünftiger Tod)과 ‘자유로운 죽음’(freier Tod)을 강조하면서 자살을 옹호하는 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 또한 디오니소스적 긍정, 힘에의 의지, 초인, 영원회귀 등과 같은 사상을 바탕으로 일반적으로 추론 가능한 니체 철학의 핵심은 삶과 현실에 대한 긍정이다. 이 연구는 자살과 관련하여 이와 같이 외견상 모순되어 보이는 니체의 관점을 올바로 이해하고자 하는 목적을 가진다. 니체의 텍스트에 근거하여 필자는 니체에서 자유로운 죽음을 옹호하는 것과 자살을 금지하는 것은 모순된 것이 아니라는 것을 밝히고 있다. 왜냐하면 니체가 자유로운 죽음을 옹호하는 것은 삶에 대한 종교적 집착을 비판하기 때문이다. 니체에 따르면 삶에 대한 종교적 집착에서 나오는 삶의 긍정은 오히려 삶을 부정하는 종교적 논거에 기초해 있다. 이와 반대로 자유로운 죽음은 삶을 그 자체로 긍정하는 디오니소스적 긍정 또는 현세의 긍정에 바탕을 두고 있다. 따라서 니체가 ‘자유로운 죽음’을 통해 자살을 옹호하는 것과 ‘힘에의 의지’ 및 ‘영원회귀’ 사상을 통해 자살을 비판하는 것은 외견상 모순되는 것처럼 보일지라도 실제로 현실과 삶에 대한 긍정을 통해 하나로 수렴될 수 있다.
Abstract
Nietzsche seems to advocate suicide, as he emphasizes rational death and free death. But the core of the philosophy of Nietzsche, which we can see from such concepts as Dionysian affirmation, the will to power, the Overman(Übermensch), and eternal recurrence, is the affirmation of life and reality. This study aims to explain the perspectives of Nietzsche correctly, which may appear contradictory in regard to suicide. Based on Nietzsche's text, I demonstrate that there is no contradiction between the perspectives in Nietzsche, which on the one hand supports free death, and on the other hand prohibits suicide. This is because Nietzsche's advocacy of free death is based on the criticism of the religious obsession with life. According to Nietzsche, the affirmation of life (which is based on the religious obsession with life) is rather based on religious grounds, which actually denies life. In contrast, free death is based on the Dionysian affirmation or the affirmation of this world, which affirms life in itself. Therefore, even if Nietzsche's advocacy of suicide through 'free death' and his criticism of suicide through the 'will to power' or 'eternal return' may seem to be contradictory, they can be reconciled into one on the basis of the affirmation of life and reality.
