자기에게 충실함으로서의 자유 개념 - 니체와 철학사적 맥락 -

초록

니체는 한편으로 자기를 지배할 힘이 있는 강한 개인들을 높이 평가하며자유에 대해 말하는 것으로 보이지만, 그가 자유의지 개념을 부정하고 자유보다 필연성을 강조한 것은 알려져 있다. 이런 면에서, 자유에 대한 니체의 흩어져 있는짧은 언급들은 때로 일관성이 없는 것처럼 보이기도 하며, 이런 점이 니체의 자유관에 대한 확정된 이해가 아니라 다양한 해석을 낳게 되는 것으로 보인다. 본고는니체가 자유와 필연성의 합치를 말했다는 점에 주목하면서, 그리스도교적 의지 개념이 자유 논의를 지배하기 이전의 고대철학적 맥락에서의 사상적 흐름을 고려할때 자유에 대한 니체의 사상을 더 잘 이해할 수 있다는 점을 논한다. 그것은 자유를 자연 혹은 자연의 필연성과의 합치로 이해하는 흐름이며, 니체의 자유관도 이맥락에서 이해될 수 있다. 여기서는 선택항이 많다는 것은 자유가 아니며 오히려나에게 좋은 것이 무엇인지 모르는 결함을 나타낸다. 그리하여 내가 나의 자연의필연성에 따라 나에게 좋은 것을 행하는 것이 자유로 이해되며, 이러한 관점이 니체에게서도 표현되고 있다.

Abstract

Nietzsche seems to place a high value on the individuals strong enough to be autonomous, but he also denies the concept of free will and stresses necessity rather than freedom. In this way, Nietzsche's brief and dispersed remarks on freedom seem to be non-definitive and allow various interpretations, as his statements appear inconsistent. I argue that to understand Nietzsche's idea of freedom we have to consider a certain line of thought in the ancient philosophical context, which takes freedom in congruity or harmony with nature, before the Christian notion of will dominates the discussion of freedom. In this line of thought, having many options or alternatives to choose from does not mean being free but means being deficient and not knowing what is good for oneself. Here one is viewed as free when they act by necessity of their nature for the sake of their own good. This thought is also expressed in Nietzsche’s view of freedom.
