본 논문의 목적은 드워킨의 평등론을 정리하여 소개하는 것으로서, 먼저 그의 주요 저작에 나타난 그의 자원의 평등론을 정리하였고, 다음으로 그 평등론에 대한 다른 학자들의 비판적 견해를 그의 평등론에 대체적으로 동조하는 학자들의 견해를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 드워킨의 입장이 그와는 다른 입장들, 그중에서도 특히 롤즈의 입장과 어떻게 다른지에 대해 살펴보았다. 드워킨의 평등론에 대해 많은 학자들이 제기하는 문제들 가운데 많은 것들이 분배가 선택에 민감해야 한다는 원칙과 관련된 것들이다. 드워킨은 지금까지 제기된 그런 문제들에 대해서 나름대로의 대답을 제시하였지만, 코헨을 비롯해서 많은 학자들이 그의 대답에 만족하지 않고 재반론을 제기하고 있다. 그에 관한 논의의 귀결이 어떻게 이루어지든지간에 드워킨의 이론이 전체적으로 무너질 가능성은 없다. 왜냐하면 자원의 분배가 어느 정도는 선택에 민감해야 한다는 것에 대해서는 드워킨의 주요 비판자들뿐만 아니라 대부분의 사람들이 동감하고 있는 대중적 도덕성의 부분이기 때문이다. 그 논의의 결과는 드워킨의 이론에 대한 부정이라기보다는 오히려 롤즈로부터 비롯되었다고 할 수 있는 자유주의적인 평등주의적 분배 정의론의 완성된 모습이 될 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to introduce Ronald Dwokin's Equality of Resources rather than criticize it. I analyze his texts concerning the theory of equality in the first part of this paper. Next, I consider some views of the critics, mainly those of internal critics. In the last part of this paper I compare Dworkin's theory of distributive justice with others, especially that of John Rawls.The Issues great many critics raised about his theory of equality are concerning the principle that the distribution of resources should be sensitive to choice. He have answered the questions about the subject, but many scholars, including G. A. Cohen, are rebutting the answers. I think no matter what the conclusion of the discussion is, Dworkin's theory of equality will not fall totally. For that the distribution of resources should be sensitive to choice at least in some degree, is part of public morality. If we can reach the conclusion, that means the completion of liberal egalitarian theory of distributive justice rather than refusal of Dworkin's theory.
