이 논문의 주된 목적은 데이빗슨의 은유 이론에 대한 검토를 통해 그가 유지하는 ‘문자적 의미’ 개념이 객관주의적 요청에 근거한 그릇된 개념이라는 것을 밝히려는 것이다. 필자는 기호적 경험에 관한 체험주의적 해명을 따라 데이빗슨의 은유 이론의 난점을 드러내고, 그의 문자적 의미 개념이 경험주의적 독단의 산물이라는 점을 지적할 것이다. 체험주의적 해명에 따르면 언어는 그 자체로 기호체계이며, 따라서 모든 언어적 의미는 기호적으로 구성된다. 기호적 의미는 이미 주어져 있는 경험 내용을 언어적 기표에 은유적으로 사상하는 방식으로 이루어지며, 이러한 사상은 본성적으로 파편적이다. 사상의 본성적 파편성 때문에 한 기호의 확정적 의미는 존재하지 않는다. 대신에 데이빗슨은 은유적 의미의 존재를 인정하지 않으며, 은유는 다만 은유적 ‘사용’을 통해 특정한 화용론적 기능을 갖는다고 주장한다. 여기에서 데이비슨은 문자적 의미만이 유일한 언어적 의미라고 주장한다. 데이빗슨의 문자적 의미 개념은 진리 조건적 의미 이론에 근거하고 있으며, 그것은 다시 모종의 언어/경험 대응 개념에 의존하고 있다. 데이빗슨은 언어와 경험의 대응이라는 개념을 통해 객관적 의미의 근거를 유지하려고 한다. 필자는 언어/경험 대응을 ‘경험주의의 네 번째 독단’이라고 부르려고 한다. 그것은 아마도 경험주의의 마지막 독단이 될 것이다. 언어/경험 대응 독단은 데이빗슨 자신의 의이 미론의 정합성에 난점을 불러올 뿐만 아니라 의미에 대한 새로운 경험적 해명의 가능성을 가로막는다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is by examining Davidson's theory of metaphor to show that his notion of "literal meaning" is a theoretical illusion postulated by his objectivist committment. This analysis is based on the experientialist account of the nature of "symbolic experience," according to which language itself is a system of signs, and thus its meaning is symbolic by nature. Symbolic meaning is structured by means of "symbolic mapping" of a given piece of experience onto a signifier. Then the signifier is understood "in terms of" the mapped experiential content. Davidson firmly denies that there is anything like metaphorical meaning, and claims that metaphors may only have various "pragmatic effects". His insistence that meaning be nothing but literal meaning expresses his firm conviction that meaning proper should have an objective basis. I argue that such a belief is rooted in the empiricist dogma of "language/experience correspondence", which I would call "the fourth dogma of empiricism". This dogma does not only undermine the coherence of Davidson's theory of meaning, but keeps his insights from working out into a more appropriate account of the nature and structure of meaning.
