초록
The main purpose of this paper is to offer an outline of the experientialist account of the nature and structure of symbolic experience. Despite the extended and complicated inquiries into ‘sign’, the critical question remains unanswered on how it gets its meaning. I suggest that the exprientialist conception of 'metaphorical mapping' successfully answers this question. 'Metaphorical mapping' fist came out as the key notion of the experientialist account of metaphor, which I found is nothing else than symbolization. Thus, symbolization is rendered as a matter of understanding or experiencing something 'in terms of' something else. That is, we understand a signifier in terms of our experience of the corresponding 'sign object'. That is, when we experience something at a symbolic level, we map our experience of a sign object onto the signifier. With these three elements, i.e., signifier, sign content, and sign object, I offer three most basic models for symbolic experience. This account will suffice to open plausible ways to answer some, if not all, of the crucial questions concerning the very life of signs in a whole new perspective.
