덕 윤리는 붕괴된 규범윤리학의 대안적 탐구를 자임한다. 덕 윤리의 옹호자들은 규범윤리학이 주목했던 행위의 문제에서 품성의 문제로, 의무 개념에 근거한 원리나 법칙의 문제에서 덕의 문제로 논의의 초점을 바꾸려고 한다. 그것은 “무엇이 옳은 행위인가?”라는 물음에서 “누가 유덕한 인간인가?”라는 물음으로의 전환을 의미한다. 이러한 시각의 전환은 전통적인 규범윤리학의 실패를 비켜서려는 시도이지만, 그 귀결은 덕 윤리의 옹호자들이 가정했던 것처럼 우호적인 것은 아니다. 필자는 덕 윤리의 이러한 실패가 규범윤리학과 덕 윤리가 공유하는 훨씬 더 근원적인 가정에서 비롯된다고 보았다. 즉 도덕적 탐구의 핵심적 주제가 ’좋은 것‘이라는 가정이 그것이다. 대신에 필자는 도덕적 경험의 본성을 ‘규범적 강제성’의 문제라고 보았으며, 그것을 정당화할 수 있는 궁극적 근거가 좋은 것이 아니라 ‘나쁜 것’이라고 보았다. 즉 우리는 나쁜 것에 대해서만 규범적 강제성을 정당화할 수 있으며, 따라서 윤리학의 핵심적 관심사는 ‘나쁜 것’이 되어야 한다는 것이다. 이 구분에 따르면 좋은 것에 관한 논의는 규범적 강제성의 문제가 아니라 사적 가치의 문제가 된다. 이러한 관점에서 덕 윤리는 ‘좋은 것의 윤리학’의 또 다른 변형이며, 사실상 규범적 강제성의 문제를 외면하는 한 사실상 사적 가치들을 다루게 된다. 좋은 것의 윤리학의 구도를 근원적으로 비켜서지 않는 한 규범윤리학의 대안으로서의 덕 윤리는 실패한 기획이 될 수밖에 없을 것이다.
Abstract
Virtue ethics has claimed to be a viable alternative to normative ethics collapsed by analytic challenges in the early 20th century. Virtue ethicists have turned their focus from the issues of ‘act’ or ‘duty’ onto those of character or virtue, which means the transition of the question from “What is right act?” to “Who is virtuous?” Although this is an attempt to go over the failure of the traditional normative ethics, its consequence is not as favorable as was anticipated. I argue that another failure of virtue ethics is rooted deep in its assumption which was shared with normative ethics that the central task of ethics is to find out the highest good. Instead, I argue that what distinguishes ‘moral experience’ form other types of experience is ‘normative compulsion’, which can be justified only against ‘the bad’. That is, we can justify any compulsion only against the bad, and thus it has to be the crucial concern of any ethical inquiry. According to this view, the good becomes the matter of private values instead of the matter of moral compulsion. In this picture, virtue ethics is nothing but another variation of “ethics of the good”, which amounts to dealing with private values. Insofar as virtue ethics sticks to the issues of the good, it is doomed to failure, despite its claim to make an alternative to normative ethics.
