Abstract

The study examines appropriate principles for the museum exhibits from the existing ‘instructional message design’, and aims to analyze practical usage of message design theories by analyzing ‘message design’ principles of the renowned world natural history museums. Forty-nine principles that were considered appropriate for the museum exhibits were selected from Flemming and Levie's(1983) 261 ‘instructional message design’ principles, and from this 21 observable principles were again extracted through pilot test. A content analysis was performed to see how these principles are used in the exhibits of Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and American Museum of Natural History. The most frequent principle was ‘distinction between figure and ground is clear’. ‘text set in lower case is used in the main text except in the titles’ and ‘headings, annotations, and paragraphs are used in the margins’ also showed high frequencies. ‘Illustrations are closely related to the text's content’, ‘Colored picture(graphics) is used’, and ‘Interpretative picture is used’ were also found in more than half of the exhibits. Out of 21 principles that were found in the exhibits, 10 were motivational, 10 were perceptual, and 1 were attitudinal principles. Frequencies in the types of message design principles showed 86.3% in perceptual, 12.3% in motivational, 1.4% in attitudinal principles. In order to increase the validity of the research interviews, qualitative method, preliminary study methods were used to understand the characteristics of the two natural history museums.
