Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the role of line length in text and types of task when learning with a combination of text and graphic. This study set up two specified goals. First, the experiment 1 was to identify if the line length. Ninety one students participated into 2 by 2 factorial design. The result revealed that there was a significant main effect by the line length. Specifically, the condition of 25cpl showed higher mental effort than those of 75cpl. The following experiment 2 was conducted with 80 college students. For this experiment, two types of task (concept learning vs. procedural learning) were implemented. For the concept learning, usability and self-evaluation factors showed significant differences. However, no differences of the rest factor were found. Indeed, the result showed that there were no significant differences on reading time and comprehension test. However, for the procedural learning, there were different results. For the cognitive load factors, perceived task difficulty, usability, and self-evaluation showed significant difference by the treatment conditions. Additionally, there was a significant difference by comprehension test score. The group with a learning material of contiguity principle outperformed the group with non-contiguity learning material.
