Abstract
It has been 3 years since K-MOOC launched. Most of the studies have focused on case analysis of MOOC or development and operation strategies from a perspective of instructors since it’s on early stage. However, understanding students should take a precedence in order for a sustained growth of K-MOOC and it is not sufficiently accomplished with survey or quantitative research. This study attempts to explore the process and essence of learners’ experience in K-MOOC, which is difficult to achieve by positivism approach. We recruited a total number of 17 participants through criterion sampling and snowball sampling. The participants were interviewed 1:1 and recorded data were transcribed. The data were analyzed using Colazzi’s phenomenological method and resulted in 2 categories, 8 theme clusters, and 19 themes. The findings are as follow: For learners’ experience process, participants demonstrated 1) low level of awareness and expectation, 2) freedom with no burden, 3) little achievement and satisfaction. 4) lack of learner support & quality control, and 5)expectations of differentiated online courses. With regard to learners’ meaning, participants expressed 1) expansion of thoughts and get out of a man of narrow view, 2) self-regulated and mature learning experiences, and 3) foundation for continuous learning for adults. Based on the findings, we suggested implication for instructors and administrators at K-MOOC.
