Abstract

This study was to analyze how emoticon use was different and what its effects were depending upon problem types and discussion message types in the process of online problem-solving discussions under a communication environment using smart phone. To collect the data for the study, the participants, who were 8 middle school students, were asked to discuss and solve ill- and well-structured problems within the Kakaotalk program. After the problem-solving tasks, they were asked to get in-depth interview. The study conducted statistical and content analysis under the Henri’s message analysis frame and also conducted qualitative analysis with in-depth interview data. Research findings were as follows: First, they used more emoticons when participants tried to solve ill-structure problem than well-structured problem. Second, emoticon types were different depending on discussion message types in the discussion process of ill-structured problem-solving. Specifically, text emoticons were more frequently used than other types of emoticons. Finally, the qualitative analysis of emoticons on problem solving discussion showed that total four main themes were emerged, including the reinforcement of emotional expression, the activation of communication, the positive building of social relationships, and cultural identity of juvenile.
