본고는 고지도가 지역이해를 위한 수업자료로서 어떤 의미를 가질 수 있는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 우선 고지도를 활용한 지역지리학습의 이론적 기초로서 그에 대한 해석적 접근의 가능성을 제시한 후, 고지도를 통해 파악할 수 있는 특성들과 관련된 지리교육적 개념들을 도출해 보았는데, 가령 입지, 인간과 환경간의 관계, 지역 내 경관요소들의 공간관계, 장소 등의 개념이 그것이다. 고지도를 활용한 지역지리학습에서 주목되는 부분은 지역이해를 위해 도출되는 개념의 독특성보다는 그러한 개념과 관련된 제 현상들의 특성을 어떻게 파악해 볼 것인가 하는 접근의 문제라고 할 수 있다. 즉, 지도에 표현된 제 현상들의 형태적 특성 외에 의미읽기(해석)를 통한 개념의 이해와 그를 통한 지역이해가 고지도 활용에서 주목할 부분인 것이다.이를 기초로 고지도 활용을 통해 도출된 개념 중 먼저 입지개념을 중심으로 1차시 수업을 구성해 보았는데, 학습자들의 흥미유발이나 참여도를 높이는 수업자료로서 고지도는 몇 가지 가능성을 보여주었다고 할 수 있다. 가령, 고지도 활용을 통한 사회과통합 교육의 구성 및 지역 내 역사·문화경관의 체험학습을 위한 기초 자료의 제공을 통한 가치교육의 제고 등이 그것이다. 차후 적어도 4-5차시 이상의 수업안 구성을 통한 고지도 활용학습이 시도된다면, 입지 개념 외에 여타의 지리교육적 개념들에 대한 이해가 증진될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
This study aims to explore the possibility of using the old maps as the teaching materials for regional geography education. For that time, a lot of teaching and learning through maps have focused on the topographical maps and statistical maps produced by modern cartographic methods. So we established some theoretical basis for interpreting(or reading) the old maps as a geographical text. And we considered the old map as the construction of form and meaning, reflecting the epistemological basis related to nature and human and the social relation. And then, we extracted some geographical(geography education) concepts for regional geography: location, relation between nature and human, and locational, social relation of geographical landscapes, place, etc. Finally, we applied this theoretical basis and map interpretation to the practical teaching and learning for regional geography. Such teaching and learning through the old maps suggested some meaning results and possibilities for the integration of social studies education, regional geography, value-laden education.
