Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of college students’ social anxiety in the relationship between self-esteem and social media addiction. For the study, 204 college students have completed a survey assessing the perception of self esteem, social anxiety and social media addiction. Results are as follows: First, social media addiction had a negative correlation with self-esteem but positive correlation with social anxiety. The students’ tendency to be addicted to social media grow more, the lower their self-esteem dropped while their social anxiety rose. Second, social anxiety partially mediated the relationship between self-esteem and social media addiction. It shows that social media addiction is influenced by one's self-esteem and also affected by social anxiety. Third, social phobia and social interaction anxiety, which are the subset of social anxiety, each partially mediated the relationship between self-esteem and social media addiction. Based on these findings, in order to reduce college students’ addiction, self-esteem should be raised and simultaneously there should be intervention on social anxiety - social phobia and social interaction anxiety. Possible directions for future research were also suggested.
