Abstract

This study examined the relationship between contingent self-esteem and SNS addiction proneness, focusing on the mediating role of SNS upward comparison and the moderating role of negative reinforcement motives. College students (N = 400, aged 19–25) completed an online survey. Results showed contingent self-esteem had no direct effect on SNS addiction proneness; however, SNS upward comparison fully mediated this relationship. Negative reinforcement motives moderated the indirect effect, with stronger associations among individuals with higher negative reinforcement motives. Findings suggest interventions targeting cognitive processes (SNS upward comparison) and motivational factors (negative reinforcement motives) may prevent SNS addiction in college students with high contingent self-esteem.
