초록

최근 많은 연구자들이 학습자들의 일상적 생활세계에 토대를 둔 ‘사적 지리’를 중심으로 한 (지역)지리교육 내용과 과정의 새로운 틀을 강력히 제기해 왔다. 하지만, 생활세계 자체가 점차적으로 미디어 네트워크와 시각적 이미지들로 채워지고 있는 상황에서, 학습자들의 사적 지리는 이념적으로 중립적이거나 순수할 수 없으며, 상업주의적 시각적 이미지들로 재현된 그리고 학습자들의 실존적 삶에서부터 탈맥락화된 ‘상상적 지리’의 영향을 받는다. 그 결과 학습자들은 자신과 사회에 대한 비판적 사고가 정지해 버리고, 단지 소비를 통해만 자아를 실현하는 Marcuse의 ‘일차원적 인간’으로 되고 있다. 이와 같은 문제의식과 현실상황에서 본 논문은 오늘날 기술주의와 소비주의의 이데올로기 망에 위치하는 일상적 생활세계의 ‘사적 지리’를 ‘상상적 지리’가 아니라 ‘비판적 지리’를 통해서 바라 볼 수 있는 중심적 위치에 학교 지리교육이 위치해야 할 것을 주장한다.

Abstract

Recently, many researchers have strongly suggested the new framework of (regional) geography education with reference to the learners??rivate geographies?grounded on their everyday life worlds. However, in the situation that the life world itself is increasingly filled with media networks and visual images, the learners?private geographies cannot be ideologically neutral or innocent and are more and more influenced by ?maginative geographies? represented as visual images combined with commercialism and decontextualized from the learners?existential lives. As a result, the learners are rendered ?ne-dimensional men?in Marcuse? terms, who are unable to think critically of themselves and their society, only being interested in self-realization through consumption. In this question and context, this paper argues that geography education in schools needs to be located where the learners can see their ?rivate geographies? which are on the ideological web of technology and consumption, not through ?maginative geographies?but through ?ritical geographies?
