Abstract
This study investigated a effective strategy present of illustration by selecting two factors that effect learner’s understanding of illustration. Two factors include (1) the spatial placement of the illustration and text, (2) the existence and nonexistence of the instruction related to the illustration. Texts for this study were developed by selecting illustrations-‘qanat’ and ‘the artesian well’. The texts were divided into type A(separation) and type B(unity) for the spacing of the illustration and text. And they were also divided into type B and type B-1(instruction) for the existence and nonexistence of the instruction. In addition, questions were designed to determine learners’ understanding of the texts. A total of 334 seventh grade students participated in the experiment administered in May 2009. This study showed that mean score of group of type B was higher than group of type A in both qanat and the artesian well. But mean score between the group of type B and the group of type B-1 showed no difference. The result of this study could be used when the illustration is made on the textbook.
