Abstract
This study is on the factors and the process that help students achieve an experience of flow. (1) Factors of flow are classified into two categories, internal and external factors, whose interactions lead to the flow state. Among the external factors are ‘Balance between challenges and skills’, ‘Interactions’,‘Clear goals for the class’, and the internal factors include ‘Expectation’, ‘Confidence’, ‘Feeling of success’,‘Fun’, ‘Arousal’, ‘Initiative’, ‘Relaxation’, ‘Responsibility’, ‘Sense of control’, and ‘Respect’. (2) The process of the flow can be classified into two types ; the flow by the ‘Balance between challenges and skills’, and the flow by the ‘Interactions’. The first type is achieved when students have both cognitive and technical skills related to the manipulation of concrete materials which is based on the activities in the social studies. The second type tends to happen in the presence of factors such as the ‘Balance between challenges and skills’, ‘Clear goals for the class’, ‘Sense of control’, ‘Responsibility’, ‘Expectation’, ‘Initiative’, and ‘Arousal’, and when learners share similar learning traits within the group. Either type of flow process is enhanced with a consecutive, interrelated thematic curricular development. Overall, the flow process depends on the individual learning traits and the classroom environments, including internal and external factors.
