최남선은 뛰어난 지리사상가이자 지리교육자였음을 그의 사회활동이나 저술에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 그의 지리적 사상과 행적을 가장 잘 파악할 수 있는 자료중 하나가 ‘소년’지이다. 최남선은 소년지에서 다양한 지리적 주제와 자료를 상당한 지면에 할애하면서 국민계몽수단으로서의 세계지리사상의 필요성을 역설하고 있다. 특히 ‘해상대한사’에서는, 세계 여러 지역에 존재하는 반도의 지리적, 역사적 우월성을 지나칠 정도로 강조하고 있고 이를 통해, 반도국인 우리나라의 무한한 지리적 가능성과 민족적 자긍심을 독자들에게 심어주고자 하고 있다. 이러한 사항은 현대 지리교육에 있어 시사하는바가 매우 크다고 생각된다.
Abstract
As manifested in his social activities and literary works, Choe Nam-Seon was a great philosopher and educator in geography. Choe's philosophy and achievements in geography are best represented in the magazine 'SONYEON(少年)' among other works. To stress why a philosophy in world geography is needed as a tool for educating the public, Choe Nam-Seon dedicated a large number of pages of 'SONYEON' to present various geographic topics and information. In particular, 'SONYEON' featured a serial article entitled 'HAESANGDAEHANSA(海上大韓史)' in which Choe overly emphasized how several peninsulas around the world had both geographic and historic advantages. Using these articles, he tried to convince the readers that Korea as a peninsula also has infinite geographic potentials and that they should therefore feel proud of being Koreans. Choe's philosophy and educational methodology in geography represented in 'SONYEON', particularly in its article 'HAESANGDAEHANSA', are full of useful suggestions for modern geography education.
