Abstract

This paper analyzes impacts of the integrated curriculum on actual classes of social studies in middle school and suggests some implications for future direction, based on a survey result that contains opinions of middle school teachers. The result of the survey is as follows. First, for the questions about the impacts of integrated curriculum on attaining goals of social studies education, which were asked only to the teachers who agreed with the pattern of integration in the 7th National Curriculum, most of the teachers responded that current parallel pattern of integration is better than trans-disciplinary approaches for systematic learning of knowledge, whereas only small portion of respondents answered that current pattern is better in achieving goals of social studies. Second, most teachers responded that not only current pattern of integration would not bring educational effects of integration, but also it added more difficulties in their teaching and other class activities. Especially, one of the problems they found was lack of specialty when they teach non-majored areas. Third, most teachers responded that current pattern of integration should be changed in a way that reflects identity of each academic discipline. In this context, teachers suggested three patterns of integration, which are geography focused integration, history focused integration, the integrations, and civics focused integration. Also, they asserted that in order to generate educational effects while at the same time maintaining identity of each discipline, it is necessary to reorganize academic knowledge into educational contents once consensus on basic framework in which balance and harmony between the three disciplines are possible. In addition, they asserted that the national level curriculum should leave a room for flexibility in reorganizing part of the curriculum creatively, which reflects students experiences.
